Winter season arrangement using bare branches led by Sandi Hurnard

July 13, 2025 Ikebana Wellington

Sandi presenting Carolyn with her first Sogetsu Ikebana certificate

Our July Ikebana Wellington Workshop was held in the Hall at Khandallah Presbyterian Church. Fifteen of our members enjoyed using branches and vines to create very interesting arrangements.

To begin our workshop Sandi presented Carolyn with her first certificate in Sogetsu Ikebana. Then, with the support of Alyson, Sandi demonstrated how to create an arrangement that contained at least one bare branch or vine. She made use of NZ native evergreen plant material and flax. Flowers were kept to a minimum.  Some members also created a small arrangement using the same materials.

Sandi provided the following notes to help guide us.

“Winter is a great time to explore different branch materials when leaves have dropped. By emphasising branch or vine lines the creation of beautiful arrangements are still possible, especially if the branches are lichen covered and unusual green-grey or even orange colours are more prominent”.
