Japan - New Zealand Friendship

The His Excellency Mr Osawa Makoto, Ambassador of Japan sent an invitation to the members of Ikebana Wellington in June, 2026.
“We are pleased to inform you that the Embassy has decided to commend Ikebana Wellington with an Ambassador's Commendation, in acknowledgement of the organisation’s outstanding contributions since 1970. We would also like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation for Ikebana Wellington’s invaluable assistance at our key events including the Emperor's Birthday Reception, Japan Festival, and the establishment of Japan Self-Defence Forces Reception. Thank you very much.
As a token of appreciation, the Ambassador would like to invite the members of Ikebana Wellington to a lunch or dinner gathering. On this occasion, we would like to hold a commendation ceremony, during which the Ambassador will present you with a Certificate of Commendation as a representative of Ikebana Wellington.”
It was an honour and privilege to be invited to the Ambassador’s residence and receive a commendation for our efforts to strengthen and promote Japan - New Zealand friendship. Ikebana has been alive and well since 1970. Long may it last.
Teacher Kate Graham designed the ikebana and was assisted in collecting materials and setting up by Teacher Masako Crawford.
A beautiful free standing ikebana arrangement was constructed by two of our members for a special event held by the Embassy of Japan to celebrate the Emperor’s birthday in March 2026. This event was held at the Great Hall at Massey University campus and the ikebana was in the centre of the large hall.
The Emperor’s birthday party was attended by 240 people, so the arrangement was seen by many visitors.
