Workshop with Setsuko Kennedy - theme 'Using two or more Containers'

August 16, 2022 Ikebana Wellington

Setsuko arranging in two vases of similar shape but different colours. She used chrysanthemums, stock and camellia leaves

Our August Sogetsu workshop was given by Sesuko Kennedy with the theme of ‘using two or more containers’ to make an arrangement.  Setsuko suggested using various combinations of containers of the same shape or different shapes, or the same colour or different colours.  Multiple placements of containers, such as placing them side by side, placing one in front of the other, or placing them diagonally can be tried.  The focal point of this lesson was to achieve a composition with the combination of multiple containers.  Some members experimented by arranging ‘composition of straight lines’ in one container and ‘composition of curved lines’ in another container, and placed the two containers of Ikebana in balance.

Workshop with Sandi on how to use fixings in containers that are difficult to use

July 10, 2022 Ikebana Wellington

Sandi used a nail to hold the lemonwood branches together in the wide-opening container

Our July workshop was led by Sandi Hurnard. She demonstrated using different fixings in several difficult-shaped containers. Fresh drop sticks and cross-bar materials were used and direct fixing using a hammer and nail were shown too. Sandi made her arrangements in difficult to use containers look easy.

Members did their arrangements in a variety of difficult to use containers - small or large openings, asymetrical shapes, openings long and thin, or patterns too dominant. A lot was learnt from Sandi’s demonstration.
