May 2013 Newsletter

by on 1 May 2013

Dear Ikebana Members,

This is my last Newsletter as President of Wellington Chapter and I would like to thank all those who have supported me during my two years. It has been a most enjoyable time and a great way to get to know our members better; I will still be involved with Ikebana International but hope to have more time to focus on my own ikebana and my teaching.
Helen and the Master

As I was preparing this Newsletter I was most excited to receive a letter from H E Ambassador Yasuaki Nogawa of the Embassy of Japan. His Excellency has kindly accepted our invitation to be a Co-Patron of our Wellington Ikebana Chapter. We will continue our tradition of appointing one of our long-serving ikebanists as Patron (currently member Cora Hazlett) but will in future offer a Co-Patron role to the Ambassador for Japan. We will have a special event to welcome His Excellency Nogawa, but hope he may be able to attend our meetings whenever he finds it convenient.

4 April – Ikebana Promotion Day

On April 4 we met at JICC to enjoy demonstrations by members of the ikebana schools represented in our Chapter. Nanette Kwok showed us Ikenobo, Valerie Ting, Koryu-Shotokai and Sandra Hurnard, Sogetsu. Members enjoyed the experience of seeing ikebana taking shape and all of our demonstrators explained the process well.

2nd May – Annual General Meeting and Viewing of DVD from the Ikebana International 10th World Convention

Our Chapter AGM will be held at 10:30am on Thursday 2 May at our usual meeting venue, the Japan Information and Cultural Centre, floor 18 Majestic Centre, Willis St. We have a full slate of nominees for the 2013-2014 Board, so you need not feel under pressure to come on the committee. The AGM will be followed at 11am by a viewing of a film of the Ikebana International 10th World Convention held in Tokyo in May 2012. I was fortunate to be able to attend this Convention and the DVD is a great way to get a taste of the international nature of our organisation.

The following Board members have indicated they will stand at the election:
· Barbara Fowler – President
· Nanette Kwok – Second Vice-President, and Committee member (Historian and Ways and Means)
· Mary-Elizabeth Bayliss – Secretary
· Helen Wareham – Treasurer
· Erris Thomson – Committee member (Publicity)
· Sandi Hurnard – Committee member (Exhibition)

· Valerie Ting – Committee member (Hospitality Support)

6th June – Two Workshops with Takako Martin

Our meeting on 6th June will be 2 workshops with Sogetsu Master Takako Martin at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Mt Victoria. There will be morning and afternoon workshops on the following themes: in the morning we will do “Festive arrangement for mid-winter Christmas” and in the afternoon “Fruiting branches and some flowers”. There are some great photos of arrangements using nandina in the latest Ikebana International magazine (Vol 57 issue 2) which may give you some ideas.

These workshops will be suitable for anyone who is interested in ikebana, whether they are Sogetsu students, members of other ikebana schools, or visitors new to ikebana. Attendees may come to one or both workshops and a light lunch will be provided. For more details have a look at the enrolment form on the last page of this Newsletter.

Ikebana International will host Takako for a restaurant dinner on the evening of 6 June, probably in Miramar at Polo or The Larder. Let me know if you would like to attend. Takako will stay in Wellington for several days and is conducting workshops for the Sogetsu Teachers’ Association on Saturday 8 June. These will be held in Khandallah and will use special wire that Takako is bringing from Japan. The morning workshop will be “Creating a work from wire” and the afternoon will be “Using your wire work in an arrangement with plant materials”. It is essential to pre-register for these workshops in order for Takako provide the wire. Please contact Sandi Hurnard, Director of the Wellington Sogetsu Teachers Association, if you are interested in attending.

Subscriptions For 2013-2014

As the Ikebana International year was changed last year to a 1 July to 30 June year, we need to collect members’ subscriptions in May and June. The Chapter Board has decided to keep the annual subscription at the same level of last year, i.e. $70 for the full year. (Members will recall that the payment last year was a one-off $60, as in the date-change year we paid a 10 month sub). As in past years, the $70 is not enough to cover the full amount of the international subscription, so the Wellington Chapter will subsidise with funds from interest on investments and our monthly raffle. The raffle prizes are all donated by members, so please let Nanette Kwok know if you have any goodies that would be suitable for a raffle prize. Thanks to those who have already paid their subscriptions and also to members who have donated goods for the raffle. New members joining for the year starting 1 July 2013 will be eligible to attend the 6 June workshop at members’ rates.

You may make your payment of $70 by cash, cheque or internet payment. Cheques should be made payable to – Ikebana International, Wellington Chapter and may be sent to Mrs Barbara Fowler, 88 Farnham Street, Mornington, Wellington, 6021. Alternatively, $70 may be deposited by internet payment to Ikebana International, Wellington Chapter, Account no – 02 0544 0217523 00. Please ensure you record your name in the statement details and record the reference as ‘annual sub.’

Looking forward to seeing members on 2 May,

Yours in friendship through flowers,

Helen Wareham (President)
