March 2014 Newsletter

by on 26 Feb 2014

Dear Members,

Our last meeting was most enjoyable with Ms. Kasue Fujimoto describing her years at the embassy in Estonia and some of the aspects of life there. Then Helen Wareham and Sandi Hurnard demonstrated lovely arrangements which emphasized some of the lessons in the Sogetsu teaching school.

This month we are having an outing to one of the outdoor events that are part of the Festival of the Arts. It is called ‘Shapeshifter 2014’ and is held in the Lower Hutt Civic and Riddiford Gardens. These are easily found by going to the Dowse Art Museum on Laings Rd. and looking to the right alongside the public car park area. This is an outdoor sculpture exhibition within an enclosure which is well sign posted. Quoting from the Festival magazine: “see approximately 60 sculptures large and small by established and emerging NZ artists – all works are for sale”. There is a charge of $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for senior citizens with the proceeds going to a charity. This is a the 6th year of this popular event and the garden is a perfect setting with the fountain, small stream, rose beds and undulating grounds, where you find some of the sculptures almost hidden away. But be warned, the grounds are probably not good for those that need to use the help of a ‘walker’. You may have seen the article about this event in the DomPost on Tuesday, February 25th, page A13.

To help our members that might not have transport to Lower Hutt I can arrange for enough drivers to meet passengers at the Wellington Railway Station. You must phone me for this though on 3894307, and I will do the organizing from there. I’m sure everyone will enjoy this meeting as we will go on to a café in Petone for lunch afterwards. For those driving themselves meet at the entrance area to the event at 10:30am. Members looking to be picked up at the railway station should be there for 10:00am.

April’s meeting will be a most enjoyable workshop by Takako Martin from Auckland. For information about how to apply please contact either Helen Wareham (970 9573) or Sandi Hurnard  (970 6809). They will provide instructions for the registration and payment. Those who attended Takako’s workshop last June know what a fun time it was.

Looking forward to seeing as many members as possible in Lower Hutt on March 6th.

Yours in friendship through flowers
Barbara Fowler (President)
