March 2012 Newsletter

by on 16 Aug 2012

Dear Ikebana Members,

February seems to have flown by, even though we have an extra day for leap year. Don’t forget that our Chapter meeting on the first Thursday is on the very first day of March.

1 MARCH MEETING

We will return to the Japanese Cultural Centre for our March meeting and will host speaker Bethney McLennan who will talk about gardening. Bethney writes in the Dominion Post on Saturdays and has very practical advice for gardening in Wellington.

Members are invited to bring along a small arrangement using fruit and/or vegetables – these will be on display for all to see and the winner will be decided by Bethney.

Don’t forget to get a drink at the coffee stand before you come up in the lift – a couple of the members will provide some nibbles.

2 FEBRUARY MEETING – WORKSHOP WITH NEW CONTAINERS AND GARDEN FLOWERS

Our first meeting for 2012 was a workshop lead by Sogetsu teacher Sandra Hurnard and was a great success. 15 members and 2 guests attended and enjoyed trying out the new (recycled) containers.

A total of $284 was raised to increase our Chapter’s funds. Many thanks to the Lough family and to our other members who donated goods for this sale.

APRIL MEETING – EXHIBITION 31 MARCH-1 APRIL

Our April meeting will be an ikebana exhibition held on Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April at California Home and Garden Centre in Miramar.

Our members’ ikebana arrangements will be on display and a teacher member will do a short ikebana demonstration each hour, starting at 10am. I hope all members will be able to come along to this and bring a friend to introduce them to ikebana. The garden centre has a fantastic variety of plants and bonsai and the in house café has great coffee.

Ikebana International members will be hosting the exhibition all day and we need your help with this, so please call our Exhibition Chair Elizabeth McMillan (Ph 380 9545) and let her know if you can spend an hour looking after the exhibition.

MEMBERS’ ACTIVITIES

Three of our Sogetsu teacher members, Elizabeth McMillan, Sandra Hurnard and I travelled to Auckland in mid February for 3 days of workshops with Mrs. Sanae Maeda. Mrs. Maeda is a senior ikebana master who travelled from Japan especially for the workshops. Acrylic board was heated, then moulded into shapes and used in ikebana arrangements. I’ll bring the photos along to our March meeting.

The workshops were attended by 40 ikebana teachers, including several from Australia. It was a great chance to catch up with other ikebanists while learning new skills.

NOMINATION FORMS FOR CHAPTER BOARD

It is still a few months until our Chapter AGM in May, but it’s time to start thinking about joining the Chapter Board. In accordance with our Constitution, nomination forms will be available at our meeting on 1 March and at our April exhibition. I am hoping that the current Board members will stand again, but new committee members are always welcome.

PROXY FORMS FOR TOKYO HEADQUARTERS

Members will have received proxy forms for the EGM concerning the new bylaws. All the members who were present signed a Chapter proxy form at the February meeting. The form will be available at the March meeting for any other members who wish to sign.

If you have any questions about this, please get in touch as I have more information from Headquarters about the bylaws.

Yours in friendship through flowers,
Helen Wareham (President)
