June 2016 Newsletter

Dear Ikebana Members,

Thank you very much for your support at last month’s AGM meeting.  Although the future of the Chapter is mixed it was very reassuring to have a good turnout. It is obvious that a large percentage of the membership would like the Chapter to continue to grow and prosper. We will endeavour to provide an interesting curriculum of activities in the coming year. Your continuing support will be important and valued.  It was also a lovely opportunity to thank Colleen Lewis for all her support over many past years and she made it seem that it was a happy privilege for her.

It was decided at the AGM to continue to subsidise the membership fee which given the falling value of the New Zealand dollar will be approximately $10 per member. It is now time to renew your membership as the fees need to be transferred to Head Quarters in Tokyo by the end of June.   Please submit $70 for your subscription by cheque or direct banking.  If you wish to pay by cheque please submit at our next meeting [2 June] or send these to our Treasurer Julie Woolf, 147 Mairangi Road, Wilton, 6012. Alternatively you can pay by direct debit into our bank account

Ikebana International Wellington Chapter 158,

As Julie is not a mind reader she asks to “please record your name in the subject area and also ‘annual sub’.  This will make her job much easier.

As Mary-Elizabeth resigned as Secretary and no-one has been prepared to step into her shoes we have been able to come up with a solution by sharing the Secretarial tasks to various members of the Committee.

The Chapter will be involved in several events during the next 6 months as well as our standard monthly meetings.  Our big event will be an Exhibition at the Dowse.  Please mark Thursday September 29 through Sunday 2 October.  We will set up the Exhibition 29 September during the morning, and this will be instead of our monthly meeting which would normally be held a week later.  Unfortunately, we were unable to book the Dowse for the following week.  However, this will coincide with Spring Festival and we are hoping that our out-of-town members will be able to join us and be involved.  This should be a great time to visit Wellington and participate in activities with Ikebana enthusiasts and visit sites such as WOW. We plan to offer practical help as well as make our visiting members very welcome.

Thursday week Val Ting will talk to us about the philosophy and principles of the School “Koryu Shohtoh-Kai”. Her theme will be Koryu meets New Zealand native foliage and she will talk about using non-traditional materials in traditional arrangements.  For those who would like to create an arrangement, bring a small round moribana container + kenzan and if possible 3 of the following (flax, fern, flax, rangiora, kawakawa).  Just a little not half the bush! This promises to be an interesting meeting and I look forward to seeing you all in “Friendship through Flowers”.
