Dear Ikebana Members,

This is my first newsletter to you all and being President will be an adventure and challenge for me. Helen will be a ‘hard act’ to follow but she has already been a huge help in many ways. Her exact notes of schedules and ‘must do’ jobs will keep me on my toes. Helen also supplied the DVD from the Ikebana International 10th World Convention at the May meeting. It was most informative and the arrangements were amazing so those who did not attend the meeting might like to borrow it to view at home. Thanks again to Helen and please contact her directly if you want to see it sometime.

We certainly have been experiencing a most gorgeous autumn following the most wonderful summer that I ever remember in Wellington. Of course with weather, we did have the Monday floods on May 6th just to remind us not to be complacent. Now with June almost here it is only about 4 weeks until the shortest day – then on up the other side.

Some of our committee and their husbands were invited to our new ambassador, His Excellency Yasuaki Nogawa’s, home for dinner last week. It was such a pleasant evening and the food was delicious. I wish you all could have joined us for this event. Hopefully, Mr. Nogawa can attend one of our meetings in the near future.

Next week, June 6th, at our monthly meeting we have a workshop taken by Sogetsu Master Takako Martin. There will be two sessions, morning and afternoon, at St. Joseph’s church hall in Mt. Victoria. We have several people registered already so if you have forgotten to let Helen know you too want to be there please phone her on 970-9573 immediately. I’m sure it will be a most enjoyable day.

This is the time of year we are collecting subscription money to be sent to Ikebana International in Japan for the 2013 – 2014 year. If you have not got around to it yet, please send the $70.00 by cash or cheque to Helen Wareham. An internet payment is also possible made to: Ikebana International, Wellington Chapter, account no – 02 0544 0217523 00. Please ensure you record your name in the statement details and record the reference as ‘annual sub’.

If we don’t see you in June, please try to be with us in July as we celebrate Japan Day at the California Garden Centre in Miramar. This will be a social occasion as well as watching Keith Lowe demonstrate the art of Bonsai – potting up, shaping and wiring the plants in their containers. We plan to lunch in the area so it is a good time to catch-up with old and new friends. We all have joined Ikebana because of a love of flowers so sharing that interest is easy with other members.

Looking forward to seeing members on 6 June.

Yours in friendship through flowers,

Barbara Fowler (President)
