July 2014 Newsletter

Dear Ikebana Members,
Our June meeting saw us back at the Wilton Bowling Club with our Dunedin member, Charlotte Morris, taking us through a ‘bare branches’ workshop. It was very interesting watching Charlotte do her arrangements and then 13 members and 5 guests proceeded to do their own work. As usual no two were alike. A lovely morning was followed by lunch at Rata Café in the Zealandia complex.

Thank you all for renewing your membership and welcome to our two new members: Rayma King from Christchurch and Yoko Shafi, one of Satomi’s students. The 2014/15 subscription payment has gone to Japan well within the deadline headquarters have set. We now have 35 members. Neville Ramsay and Heather Wilson have resigned after many years of service to I.I. Wellington.

The meeting at JICC on July 3rd is for flower lovers. Helen Guthrie from the Kapiti Camellia Society will share her knowledge of camellias with us. They are such beautiful flowers with six basic forms starting with: single shape, semi double, anemone form, paeony form, rose form double and formal double. The colour range is vast with even the palest yellow in ‘Brushfield’s yellow’. They are wonderfully hardy plants but are definitely prone to brown petals during midseason in this area. So bring your questions along and you are sure to learn something useful about camellias. Don’t forget your coffee and the 10:30 start.

Japan Day (August 23rd) preparations have begun in earnest. Photos have arrived and some of the teachers are selecting ones they think appropriate to compliment an Ikebana arrangement. The Japan Society will enlarge the chosen photos and we will shortly be asking teachers and students, advanced enough to show, to join others for this event. Two years ago this same idea was developed and it turned out to be very popular with the public as they voted for the one they liked best. All the activities this year will be at the TSB Events Centre on Queens Wharf. We encourage our ‘out of town’ members to come and join the local members in exhibiting and enjoy this lively day. You can contact Elizabeth McMillan by phone on: 04-380 9545 or email: libmac@xtra.co.nz. We will need lots of helpers on the day so please phone me on 3894307 and I’ll add you to the roster for the day. This is a great way to get to know other members better.

The meeting on August 7th will be used as an exhibition planning and practice for Japan Day on August 23rd. Those who are not exhibiting may like to be involved in helping. This is also an opportunity to purchase some lovely containers and baskets that belonged to Nanette but were donated to I.I. by her sons. There are quite a few kenzans too.

Yours in friendship through flowers,

Barbara Fowler
