December 2013 Newsletter

Dear Ikebana Members

This will be the last newsletter of 2013. Hasn’t the year gone quickly and December always seems to fly by. We have had notification of two regional conferences overseas in 2014 so if any of you are travelling to the East Coast of the USA and Germany you might like to take advantage of some of the activities that will be happening in those countries. Look online for the North American Regional Conference in May 2014 website and click on the NARC page. In August the 8th European Regional Conference is hosted by Berlin chapter #246 in Potsdam .

Our management committee has been organising our 2014 program of events and we plan to have at least 4 workshops as we know you especially like hands on activities. Our hopes of greater attendance at the meetings will help to further interest in Ikebana International. A preview of our first month of next year will be Jackie Gyenge, a Sogetsu teacher, on February 13th. Waitangi Day falls on the first Thursday in February so we will move the meeting to one week later. Currently the Majestic Centre is undergoing earthquake strengthening and JICC has their workspace squeezed in half its usual size as the work is being carried out. But we expect to be back there for our February meeting at this stage.

Plans for the December (Christmas) meeting should be enjoyable as we are going to have a shared lunch at Elizabeth McMillan’s home at 64 Ludlam St. Seatoun on Thursday, December 5th. Please arrive at 12 noon for a couple of hours as Elizabeth has an arrangement to take to the venue for the Japanese Emperor’s birthday by 3:30 that same afternoon. Elizabeth is also going to show us how to do a small arrangement to give to someone over the festive season. Then we all will do our own with the flowers, greenery and containers supplied by our club. This should be a lot of fun. As to lunch, we are asking each member to bring along a SALAD or DESSERT. So as to not have too many of one course could you please contact me with your choice of food. My phone number is: 3894307 or email me at the above address. It would be wonderful to see many of you who have not been able to attend our meetings throughout the year.

I wish everyone on behalf of our committee a joyous festive season and good health in the coming year.

Yours in friendship through flowers,
Barbara Fowler (President)
