August 2015 Newsletter

Dear Ikebana Members,

It was lovely to welcome new members (Judy Bale, Po-lin Lamb and Julie Woolf) to our last workshop. Already, Julie has become a very valued member of our Board as our Treasurer. The onset of the new financial year is extremely busy. Judy has already participated in our Exhibition and Po-lin joined in with great enthusiasm in our monthly meeting.

Yoko and Maria provided a lovely homemade morning tea. Many thanks to them both.

We ran the first raffle for some considerable time and the cyclamen in a pot was won by Liz McMillan. If you have items suitable for raffling which you are happy to donate, please bring them to our meetings.

The theme for the meeting was ‘Camellias’ and the thirteen members who participated produced a wide variety of exquisite arrangements. All in all it was a extremely happy and productive meeting. Brigitte Takenaka-Procter had prepared 3 camellia arrangements and discussed these and talked about her childhood in Japan and her early ikebana lessons as a young girl.

Our next meeting August 6 will be held at JICC [10:30-12:00]. The theme will be ‘Spring Flowers and Shrubs’ and will be lead by Liz McMillan. Please bring spring flowers and leaves and also your container, hasami (secataurs) and fixings (kenzan or dropsticks). Don’t forget a small cloth and a plastic bag for your rubbish. Liz will guide us into producing lovely arrangements for our home

The committee is working on plans for Takako Martin’s visit in October and we should be able to start accepting enrolments at the upcoming monthly meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from a first-rate Sensei so keep October 8 free (this is the second Thursday of the month rather than the usual first Thursday).

In the meantime, keep warm, safe and happy.

Sandra Hurnard
President Chapter 158
Ikebana International.
