Dear Ikebana Members,

Easter is early this year and the weather still has that summer feel; it’s been great weather in Wellington this year.

March Meeting – Japanese Wedding Kimono

Swans

Many thanks to member Carol Toner for showing us her wedding kimono collection at our March meeting. Carol told us about the special aspects of weddings in Japan and we all enjoying seeing the fantastic colours and fabrics.

4 April – Ikebana Promotion Day

On April 4 we will meet at JICC AT 10:30am to enjoy demonstrations by members of the ikebana schools represented in our Chapter. There will be arrangements demonstrated from the Ikenobo and Koryu – Shotokai classical schools and the modern Sogetsu School. This is an interesting way to compare the schools, as they all have a similar basic form but have developed in different directions over the years.

Three of our own Board members will demonstrate for us. Nanette Kwok will show us Ikenobo, Valerie Ting, Koryu- Shotokai and Sandra Hurnard, Sogetsu. This occasion will be a good opportunity to introduce friends to ikebana; as well as seeing ikebana arrangements demonstrated there will be information available about Ikebana International and ikebana lessons available in Wellington

2 May – Annual General Meeting and Viewing DVD from the Ikebana International 10th World Convention

Our Chapter AGM will be held at 10:30am on Thursday 2 May at our usual meeting venue, the Japan Information and Cultural Centre, floor18 Majestic Centre, Willis St. The AGM will be followed by a viewing of a film of the Ikebana International 10th World Convention held in Tokyo in May 2012.

Nominees for Chapter Board

In accordance with our Constitution, nomination forms for the Chapter Board will be available at our meeting on 4 April. Eight of our current Board members will stand again but sadly long time member Colleen Lewis is standing down. My two year term as President will finish at the AGM but I am happy to stand as a Board member for the new year.

So far the following Board members have indicated they will stand at the election:

– Barbara Fowler – 2nd Vice President Membership

– Mary-Elizabeth Bayliss – Secretary

– Helen Wareham – Treasurer

– Nanette Kwok – Historian and Ways and Means

– Erris Thomson – Publicity

– Sandi Hurnard – Exhibition

– Judy Grocott / Valerie Ting – Hospitality

6 June – Two Workshops with Takako Martin

Our meeting on 6 June will be 2 workshops with Sogetsu Master Takako Martin. There will be morning and afternoon workshops on the following themes: in the morning we will do “Festive arrangement for mid-winter Christmas” and in the afternoon “Fruiting branches with some flowers”.

These workshops will be suitable for anyone who is interested in ikebana, whether they are Sogetsu students, members of other ikebana schools, or visitors new to ikebana.

We plan to have the workshops from 9.30 to 3, at a venue which is easy to access for car parking. Attendees may come to one or both workshops and lunch will be provided. The location and fees for the workshops will depend on numbers attending, so please let one of the II Board know if you are planning to attend.

Subscriptions for 2013-2014

As the Ikebana International year was changed last year to a 1 July to 30 June year, we need to collect members’ subscriptions in May and June. The Chapter Board has decided to keep the annual subscription at the same level of last year, i.e. $70 for the full year. (Members will recall that the payment last year was a one-off $60, as in the date-change year we paid a 10 month sub).

As in past years, the $70 is not enough to cover the full amount of the international subscription, so the Wellington Chapter will subsidise with funds from interest on investments and our monthly raffle. The raffle prizes are all donated by members, so please let Nanette Kwok know if you have any goodies that would be suitable for a raffle prize.

You may make your payment of $70 by cash, cheque or internet payment. Cheques should be made payable to – Ikebana International, Wellington Chapter and may be sent to Mrs Barbara Fowler, 88 Farnham Street, Mornington, Wellington, 6021. Alternatively, $70 may be deposited by internet payment to Ikebana International, Wellington Chapter, Account no. – 02 0544 0217523 00. Please ensure you record your name in the statement details and record the reference as ‘annual sub.’

Keeping in Touch with other Ikebana International Chapters

Members with email will have received a copy of the Australasian liaison newsletter which has news of the other Ikebana International chapters in our part of the world. The programme for each Chapter is listed, so check the events if you are planning to visit Australia or Christchurch in 2013.

I have enclosed a copy of the Newsletter for those without email accounts. Many chapters now publish events on their websites; the links to these are in the member’s sections of the main Ikebana International website.

Members’ Activities

Elizabeth MacMillan and pupils from her Waikanae class created outdoor ikebana arrangements floating on a lake at pupil Leonie Macleod’s Waikanae property. There is more about this on our Chapter website.

Erris has put three photos in ‘Sogetsu Recent Activities’ page:

They are also in the ‘Ikebana Activities 2012/2013’ album:

Yours in friendship through flowers,
Helen Wareham (President)
